The battle for the new for 2025 Pro class has by no means been a forgone conclusion this year. Michael O’Brien and Jayden Kelly have led the pack from the very first race but two non-finishes at Spa allowed the rest to close back up. In fact, after that weekend the top three cars were separated by just four points. The gap grew a little after Nürburgring, but the two Greystone GT entries had a tough second race, allowing rivals to keep them in their sights.
There’s 16 points between the top five cars, with 30 up for grabs, so mathematically anyone could win it. Realistically, Nürburgring race two winners Zac Meakin and Harry Burgoyne would need a disaster to befall their four cars ahead to stay within a chance of glory in the final race of the year.
Similarly, Samuel Harrison & Leonidas Karavasili at 14 points behind would need something exceptional to happen to stay in contention. That said, they have a 100% podium strike rate and to be so close despite missing the opening two races of the year shows they have the speed. The win has so far eluded them, could it happen at Paul Ricard? If they broke their duck, it would improve their title chances and take crucial points off their rivals.
Sitting third and nine points off the lead is 2024 champion Alejandro Geppert and Will Aspin. The drivers of the number 12 SMC Motorsport-run McLaren Trophy EVO have a win and three further podiums to their names so far. Alejandro put it on pole at Monza, so maybe the long straights and fast turns of Paul Ricard will once again suit his driving style. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
The Greystone GT cars have undeniably been the class of the field this year, with Sam Neser and former F2 racer Josh Mason the only pair to have taken more than one race win, other than teammates O’Brien and Kelly. They’ve taken two further podiums to go with their wins at Monza and Spa and sit six points behind their Greystone GT stablemates, but they are more than up for the challenge. One this is for sure, O’Brien and Kelly might have the advantage, but they are going to bring their A game at Paul Ricard.
